As of today, the course conditions are Wild West Gravel. With most of the course completely unmaintained over the winter, the surface is by turns rutted, chunky, rocky, steep, loose, fast, smooth, dusty. Be prepared for rugged roads and some vegetation overgrowth - and for variable weather. This is Wild Horse Gravel.
Getting There
Your home base for the weekend is The High Lonesome Ranch.
As you arrive, you will be directed to short-term parking at The High Lonesome Ranch rodeo grounds for packet pick-up. From there, long-term parking will depend on where you are staying. Cabin dwellers will park next to their building; campers will park in a field adjacent to the camping area. We'll direct you at check-in.
Camping Elevated Spots Still Available
A few camping elevated accommodations are still available for Friday and Saturday nights. Book by emailing Summit Cycle Solutions at info@summitcyclesolutions.com. Or bring your own stuff. Either way, plan for cool evening temps!
Registration / Packet Pick-Up
On Friday, May 13, registration and packet pick-up will take place directly across the road from the rodeo grounds in an old school house. Here you will receive your race credentials, including number plate, race bib (with meal tags), commemorative gift and course map. If you pre-ordered merchandise, then you'll get that, too.
Hours are 5 - 9 p.m.
If arriving early on Saturday, May 14, please park in the rodeo grounds and then ride over to the main ranch house to get your reg packet. Hours are 6 - 8 a.m.
Course highlights & GPX files
Regardless of the course you have registered to race / ride, please stay on the marked roads and respect the land, vegetation and wildlife around us. A race briefing will be held on Friday evening at 8:30 p.m. View the course map here.
The day of racing / riding will commence with a mass start at 8 a.m. Racers are to congregate toward the front, followed by short course riders. Outside+ members will be called up to the front for each category.
Long course timing
The day’s race will begin with a neautral rollout to and through the Town of De Beque, approximately 10 miles, at which point the timing will start. From there you will be timed all the way to the finish for a total of 55 miles of racing. The three fastest times for females and males will win cash prizes.
$1,200 - First Place $800 - Second Place $500 - Third Place
Support on Course
In the spirit of gravel riding, support will be limited. Aid stations will be located at mile 15 on the short course and miles 25 and 50 on the long course, which will include Skratch hydration, water, Bar U Eat nutrition bars, fruits, snacks and tech support, courtesy of Elevation Cycles. SAG vehicles and Rapid Response paramedics will roam both courses. Please be prepared to take care of your body and your bicycle, whatever the weather.
*Please note, due to the their remote locations in the backcountry, aid stations will not have portalets.
Showers + Pool at HLR
The High Lonesome Ranch has two indoor showers, a shower truck and a few sun-showers available for campers to use. Just bring your own towel and supplies - and a swimsuit for the saltwater swimming pool!
Feasting at the Ranch
Saturday's breakfast and post-ride BBQ are included with your registration. Pali Thai will be selling food Friday evening, along with High Lonesome Ranch at their walk-up counter.
Fun Stuff All Weekend
Good times are on tap, starting with live music by Morgan Crouse on Friday. The evening will also feature special presentations and guests to include:
Post-race, we will have more live music by The Tyler Rust Band, a bike expo, and an Oskar Blues beer garden. HLR staff will lead steer roping demos, fly fish casting clinics as well as offer horseback riding treks….or you may just relax by the fire.
Packing Suggestions
Bring it all! Seriously, pack ride clothing for all weather conditions including rain, then decide in the morning what to wear and carry. If you are camping, bring plenty of layers. It gets cold in the high valley.
